VERY IMPORTANT: This is a University level class.  All work is expected to be submitted to that academic standard.

All work should include title pages, page numbers and be formatted with the standard settings in documents: size 12 Time New Roman Font, double-space, standard margins.

Your title page and page numbers should be the same as the document in the link below:

Through the semester you will be learning how to write citations/references, which will necessary for the CCT.

Spelling/grammar/paragraph and sentence structure are expected to be perfect, otherwise, marks will be deducted for each variance to a maximum of 25% of the final mark of each task.  All work MUST be your own, or else you will receive a mark of zero for plagiarism.

For each task you will be reading an academic article to develop your understanding and application of peer helping skills.  Your CCT at the end of the semester will draw on the works of these articles in a research report.  So each week part of your task will be to complete work that will help you put together your CCT.

SAVE ALL WORK as a .rtf file or a .doc file
WITH a title with your name in it like this example: Joe B Task 3.
If you don't know how to do that, ask someone or come ask me.

    CCT

    Task #4: Conflict Resolution

Click Here for the link to the article on Restorative Practices.
Due Date May 15, 9 AM.
Be sure to use examples if you are unsure you have explained yourself.  This is where a lot of people are losing marks: lacklustre explanations without an example to demonstrate greater meaning.

    1. Knowledge/Understanding

    a. In your own words, what criticism is aimed at ‘suspension’ of a student for bad behaviour in this article?

    b. Explain in your own words each of the following:
    Formal Restorative Conference
    Affective Statements
    Restorative Circle

    2. Thinking/Inquiry

    a. What benefit does a short (maybe 1-3 days) suspension have in a conflict situation, where a student has brought hardship to a relationship with another student or a teacher? (not mentioned in the article)

    b. List the Questions That Can Make Things Right to ask wrongdoers and those affected by wrongdoing.

    c. Why are the questions in (b) considered to be effective in restorative conflict resolution?

    d. Do you normally see conflict within the classroom/school handled in a “Restorative” manner or some other manner?  Explain your response.  Is the way you see conflict resolved effective?

    3. Application

    a. Write about a situation in a class you have witnessed (your peer helping placement, or one of your own) that you feel could have been handled better through “Restorative Practices”.  Explain how you would have used the “Restorative” style to resolve the conflict.

    4. CCT Preparation

    a. As usual, in 75-100 words, summarize the article in a manner that demonstrates how you can use the information to improve your leadership skills.

    b. Create a bibliography citation for this article in the APA style (you will have to look around the article to find all the elements).

    Task #3

    Due Date: Friday, April 17

Your Task 3 is below but before you read that, read this:
You will also have to teache 1 lesson this semester.  The article from the next task (4) will help you design a lesson plan (in consultation with your teacher) - but in case your teacher asks you to teach a lesson soon: click here for a LESSON PLAN OUTLINE and RUBRIC.  You MUST follow this in creating your own lesson plan to present in your class.  This must also be submitted BEFORE you teach a lesson.  If you DO NOT submit it to your teacher in advance, you may not be graded on that lesson.

The K/U and T/I questions relate to this documenton Relationship Connectors.  The APP questions relate to the previous document and to this document on Case Studies.

REMEMBER to answer all questions as academic; in other words, edit your work, use full sentences and treat each response as if the reader does not know the question (so you need to incorporate some of the question in the wording of the response).

    1. Knowledge/Understanding

There are 6 sub-topics in this article, addressing the necessity of leaders to demonstrate strong skills and awareness for what the authors call “Relationship Connectors”.  While the article talks about the leader (a Principal) of a school’s need to develop this awareness and these skills, they are important for ANYONE in leadership.  State in a couple of sentences, for EACH sub-topic, how these translate to your role as a peer LEADER.   Be very specific to your own work/experience.

    2. Thinking/Inquiry

    a) What do you want to do with your life after high school?  How will the information in this article impact your ability to become an effective leader in your field?

    b) Do you believe in what the article is saying about “relationship connectors”?  Are there aspects that you question?  If so what are they and explain.  If you accept it all, why?

    3. Application
    a) Read the case studies from the link above.
For each case respond with how you as a Peer Leader SHOULD respond to each of the situations, taking into consideration the principles of confidentiality and trust.  You need to explain what steps each situation requires of a responsible peer leader, balancing that with the aspects of when you should break confidentiality.

b)No 75-100 words this week - but be sure to include the Article citation for the Relationship Connectors article in the APA style.
Example of APA style for articles:
Mellers, B. A. (2000). Choice and the relative pleasure of consequences. Psychological Bulletin, 126, 910-924.
Author. (Date). Article Title. Journal Title, Journal Volume, Pages.

    Task #2
    Due Date Friday March 13

Please save your work in the format that follows:

First Name, Last Initial Task 2.
ex: Ben S Task 2.              It makes my life easier.

    Read the .pdf article,
     Howard Gardner and Multiple Intelligences

Take a test to discover your multiple intelligences (MI) results.  This is not an overly in-depth test, mind you, but gives you an idea of how it works. http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/what.cfm (Click on “Take a Test” at the top)

    1.   (K/U)

    a. The Smith article delineates the 7 intelligences originally described by Gardner.   These 7 are often divided into 3 groups.  What are these groupings?  What criteria is used to categorize them?  Why is it important to see the 7 intelligences in terms of groupings instead of only looking at them individually?

    b. What are the 4 intelligences that could be added to the original seven?  How are they similar to each other?  How are they different from each other?  How do they relate to the original seven?  Do you believe they should be added?  (Explain why you believe this)

    2.  (T/I)

    a.   Should teachers focus mainly on a student’s “intelligences” strengths?  Explain.

     b.  This “Multiple Intelligences “ theory/view  is supported by a large number of people in education but not yet by everyone.  There are still many who do not adhere to it.  What are three possible areas of concern or questions that still need further clarification that you found in the article.

     c.  There are other “intelligence” or “learning style” theories.   Investigate and briefly explain two of them.

    3.  (App)

    a.  Do you agree with the outcome of the multiple intelligence test that you took for yourself?  Demonstrate through examples from your classes and/or leisure activities why you think the outcome is valid or not.

    b.  How could you further help students in your class by knowing their “intelligences”?

                                    i.  on a full-class scale  (daily or during a specific topic/lesson)

                                    ii. individual students

    4.  CCT Preparation

Your final research project, your CCT, will be about Leadership in Education (and /or Business, Sports, Family, etc)  In 75-100 words (again, no more, no less) explain how this article may or may not help to develop your leadership skills.
